48-52 E Main St

#52 c.1830 Fredrick Keller a saddler. Federal style architecture.

#48-50 1782 Matthias Tshudy. On this site he built a 2 story stone house and an adjoining brick house as a residence. He wove very thin sliced oak fibers into chip hats. Similar to an Amish straw hat.

It was replaced in 1898 for Israel Doster, dealer in general merchandise. Second floor served as the YMCA. Designed by noted Lancaster architect C. Emlen Urban. Queen Anne cross-gable dormers with finials. Now Mathew 25.

43-45-47 E. Main St

Hotel Sturgis, 1867 (Expanded to 3 stories in 1895). 3 story brick, look up to cornice which says “Hotel Sturgis”. Edward Sturgis built this despite being one block away from Lititz Springs Inn. Lots of business for both.

#47 E. Main was the Lititz Community Movie Theater from 1935-64 Inside the Purple Robin on the edge of the ceiling is the original mural by Belgium artist Franz deMerlier for the original lobby. The theater auditorium was in the back; since torn down.

The original Albert Glatz log house of 1765 on this site (45 E. Main St.) was cut in half and his tobacco shop half stands today at 500 E. Main St. next to the Rev War cemetery. It’s a private residence.

Continue west crossing the alley. Walk past Cafe Arabella but stop before A Tea Affair.
